The F1B Bernedoodle: Why This Generation Might Be the Best One Yet
If you’ve been researching Bernedoodles for more than ten minutes, you’ve probably run into a wall of letters and numbers. F1. F1B. F2. F2B. Multigen. It can feel like you need a genetics degree just to figure out what kind of puppy you want. I get it. And I’ll be honest with you — most of what’s written on the internet about Bernedoodle generations is either oversimplified or flat-out misleading.
At Berry Patch Puppies, we’ve spent years working closely with Bernedoodles of every generation. We’ve seen the differences firsthand — in coat types, in temperament, in how families respond to each dog after a year of living together. So when people ask me which generation I recommend most, I don’t give a blanket answer. But I do tell them this: for most families, especially those with allergy concerns, the F1B Bernedoodle is the one worth talking about first.
This is not a paid promotion for one generation over another. It’s an honest, experience-based look at what the F1B actually is, who it’s best suited for, and what you should realistically expect when you bring one home.

First, Let's Break Down What F1B Actually Means
The ‘F’ stands for filial, which is just a fancy word for generation. The number tells you how many generations removed from the original purebred pairing. The ‘B’ stands for backcross.
So an F1 Bernedoodle is a first-generation cross: one purebred Bernese Mountain Dog bred with one purebred Poodle. The result is a puppy that’s 50% Bernese, 50% Poodle. Beautiful dogs. Great temperaments. But the coats? Unpredictable. Some F1 Bernedoodles come out wavy and low-shedding. Others come out straighter and shed considerably more than their owners expected.
An F1B Bernedoodle takes that F1 dog and breeds it back to a Poodle. The result is a puppy that’s approximately 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese Mountain Dog. The backcross to the Poodle is a deliberate choice — it significantly increases the likelihood of a curly or wavy coat that sheds minimally. For families dealing with allergies or for anyone who simply doesn’t want dog hair covering their furniture, this matters enormously.
Here’s what I want to be clear about: being more Poodle doesn’t mean losing the Bernese magic. The personality traits that make Bernedoodles so endearing — the calm, the loyalty, the gentle nature — those are deeply embedded even at 25% Bernese. We see it in our F1B litters consistently.
The Coat Question: Why It's the Biggest Differentiator
I’ve had hundreds of conversations with families who came in thinking they wanted a certain look and left with a completely different priority. Nine times out of ten, it comes down to the coat — not because of aesthetics, but because of allergies.
Allergies to dogs are more common than most people realize. According to allergy specialists, roughly 10–20% of the population has some sensitivity to pet dander. That doesn’t mean everyone who’s allergic can never own a dog. It means they need to be thoughtful about which breed or generation they choose.
The F1B Bernedoodle, with its higher Poodle influence, tends to produce curlier coats that trap dander rather than releasing it into the air. This is why you’ll hear F1Bs described as more ‘hypoallergenic’ than F1s. I want to be careful with that word — no dog is truly hypoallergenic. But if minimizing shedding and airborne dander is your goal, the F1B is the most consistent generation for delivering that outcome.
At Berry Patch Puppies, we use genetic coat testing on our breeding dogs. This allows us to predict coat outcomes with a high degree of accuracy, which is something we’re genuinely proud of. You shouldn’t have to guess what your puppy’s coat will look like. We work hard to make sure you don’t have to.
Temperament: Does Being More Poodle Change the Dog?
This is the question I hear most often, and I understand the anxiety behind it. People fall in love with the Bernese Mountain Dog’s personality — the calm, the warmth, the almost therapeutic gentleness — and they worry that a higher Poodle percentage means a more anxious or high-energy dog.
In my experience, this concern is largely overblown. Poodles get a bad reputation based on stereotype. In reality, the Standard Poodle in particular is an intelligent, emotionally perceptive, deeply loyal dog. When you combine that with Bernese Mountain Dog traits, you don’t lose the warmth — you often amplify the intelligence and trainability while keeping the emotional connection.
Our F1B Bernedoodles are consistently some of the most adaptable, socially confident puppies we raise. They respond well to early training, they bond quickly with families, and they tend to handle new environments — including children, other pets, and travel — with remarkable ease. That adaptability comes from both sides of the breeding, and it shows.
That said, individual personality varies from puppy to puppy, regardless of generation. One thing we’ve invested heavily in at Berry Patch is early socialization — structured exposure to sounds, surfaces, people of all ages, and different environments before the puppy ever leaves us. A well-socialized F1B Bernedoodle is, in our opinion, one of the best companion dogs you can bring into a home.
Size Expectations for F1B Bernedoodles
Size is another area where the F1B generation offers something valuable: consistency. Because the Poodle influence is higher, breeders working with Miniature or Moyen Poodles can produce more reliably sized puppies. At Berry Patch, we offer Mini, Medium, and Standard Bernedoodles, and the F1B generation gives us more precision when it comes to predicting adult size.
A Mini F1B Bernedoodle will typically mature between 20–35 pounds. A Medium F1B lands somewhere in the 35–55 pound range. A Standard F1B can reach 60–90 pounds depending on the parents. These ranges are guidelines, not guarantees, but they’re much tighter ranges than you’d see in some other generations.
If you’re choosing a dog based on your living situation — an apartment, a smaller home, or perhaps a household with young children — size predictability is a real, practical advantage. It’s one reason families who do their homework often end up choosing F1B.
F1B vs. F1: Which Should You Actually Choose?
I’ll give you my honest take: if you have allergies in your household, choose F1B without hesitation. If shedding is a concern at all, choose F1B. If you want the most predictable coat outcome, choose F1B.
If you have zero allergy concerns, you love the idea of a more classic mixed-breed appearance with some variation, and shedding doesn’t bother you, then an F1 Bernedoodle is a wonderful, beautiful dog that many families adore.
Neither generation is objectively better. They’re better for different people. My job — and the reason we invest so much in genetic testing and early health screening — is to help match the right puppy to the right family. That conversation starts with understanding what generation actually means, and what it will mean for daily life in your home.
What We Do Differently at Berry Patch Puppies
We’re based in Lancaster, PA, and we’ve been raising Bernedoodles with a focus on health, temperament, and honest communication. We genetically test our breeding dogs. We raise our puppies on raw dog food diets to support gut health from day one. We build outdoor and indoor facilities that prioritize quality of life during those critical early weeks.
We also believe in transparency. If a generation isn’t the right fit for your family, we’ll tell you that — even if it means a longer conversation. We’d rather you go home with the right puppy than the wrong one.
The F1B Bernedoodle isn’t for everyone. But for the right family, it might just be the most perfect dog they’ve ever had.
